{"id":316,"date":"2013-09-18T09:34:23","date_gmt":"2013-09-18T13:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.pelleys.com\/?p=316"},"modified":"2013-09-18T09:34:23","modified_gmt":"2013-09-18T13:04:23","slug":"according-to-the-financial-post-quebec-owns-churchill-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.pelleys.com\/?p=316","title":{"rendered":"According to the Financial Post Quebec &quot;Owns&quot; Churchill Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being a hard-core believer in Newfoundland and Labrador I was very much unimpressed with the article in the online version of the Financial Post entitled<a title=\"Subscription may be required\" href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/2013\/09\/16\/northern-promise-mining-projects-spark-much-need-sept-iles-port-expansion\/?__lsa=2d15-b0dd\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<em>Northern Promise: Mining projects spark much-needed Sept-\u00celes port expansion<\/em><\/a>\u00a0where the author, Mr. Nicolas Van Praet states that &#8220;North America\u2019s biggest primary aluminum smelter \u2014 Alouette, its hill-perched electrolytic pots powered by transmission wires stretching from Hydro Quebec\u2019s massive Churchill Falls hydroelectric facility.&#8221; Where did he get the idea that Hydro Quebec\u00a0<em>owns<\/em>\u00a0Churchill Falls. Not being very impressed with this statement &#8211; which no one in the comments pickup up on &#8211; I sent the following email to Mr. Van Praet:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr.\u00a0Van Praet:<\/p>\n<p>In reference to your article\u00a0<i>Northern Promise: Mining projects spark much-needed Sept-\u00celes port expansion<\/i>\u00a0<em>you state:<\/em> &#8220;&#8230;powered by transmission wires stretching from Hydro Quebec\u2019s massive Churchill Falls hydroelectric facility&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is factually incorrect. The Churchill Falls hydro facility is owned by the Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation (CF(L)Co) which is a subsidiary of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. While Hydro-Quebec has a 34.2% ownership in the Corporation it is not\u00a0<i>their\u00a0<\/i>facility. Although one may argue that they\u00a0<i>feel\u00a0<\/i>that they own it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you should consider correcting your article.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>Mike Pelley<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I look forward to his response on the issue.
