The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/french-police-find-open-source-arresting-3039184699\/\" target=\"_blank\"> first step<\/a> was moving from Microsoft Office to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenOffice<\/a>\u00a0starting back in 2004. They moved 35,000 (yes,\u00a0<em>thousand<\/em>) users over to OpenOffice. They are in the process of upping this number to 72,000.<\/p>\n<p>They also moved users to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/thunderbird\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Thunderbird<\/a> email client and from Internet Explorer to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/new\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their next step, driven by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/windows-xp-diehards-can-you-survive-the-april-2014-deadline-7000016530\/\" target=\"_blank\">end-of-support of Windows XP<\/a>, is to move 72,000 users to a customized version of <a href=\"Ubuntu Linux\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu Linux<\/a>\u00a0called\u00a0<em>GendBuntu &#8211;<\/em>\u00a0they are up to 35,000 according to this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/it-was-a-huge-risk-how-the-end-of-xp-support-helped-frances-gendarmes-embrace-ubuntu-fast-7000022030\/\" target=\"_blank\">great article<\/a> on ZDNet.<\/p>\n<p>While I am no fan of Ubuntu &#8211; I hate the, ironic it would seem, lock-in to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unity_(user_interface)\" target=\"_blank\">Unity GUI<\/a> &#8211; and use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=0CCoQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linuxmint.com%2F&amp;ei=xdhfUoGMCqLE4APIiIHwAg&amp;usg=AFQjCNGwrQ8FZZw_QuZYqKN7LCMGmszrqg&amp;bvm=bv.54176721,d.dmg\" target=\"_blank\">Linux Mint<\/a>\u00a0with the <a href=\"http:\/\/cinnamon.linuxmint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cinnamon GUI<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; I am agnostic between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Red Hat Linux<\/a> (actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CentOS<\/a>) distribution and the Ubuntu distribution. Although, I admit, I do have to remember which distro I&#8217;m using from time-to-time.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first governmental organization to move away from Microsoft. The City of Munich<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/munichs-linux-plans-attract-international-attention-3039171380\/\" target=\"_blank\"> move to a custom Linux distro<\/a> &#8211; MiLux &#8211; starting back in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"BOSSKNB12_V2_SPECIAL_NODE\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read about the French\u00a0Gendarmerie nationale\u00a0beginning the switch from Microsoft to open source software some time ago.
