BIOS Update Wipes GRUB&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This might be the &#8220;new normal&#8221; with UEFI BIOSes but when I updated the BIOS of my IdeaPad Y50 the GRUB2 boot manager was gone and replaced by Windows 10&#8217;s boot loader.<\/p>\n<p>Even the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 didn&#8217;t mess with GRUB. (Kudo&#8217;s Microsoft &#8211; Credit where credit is due!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t have a cow, man!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was, of course fixed by booting to Linux Mint 17.2 LiveCD. Unfortunately, I\u00a0<strong>still<\/strong> cannot get the &#8220;normal&#8221; GRUB fix to work. You know:<\/p>\n<pre><code>sudo mount \/dev\/sda1 \/mnt\nsudo chroot \/mnt\nsudo update-grub2<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Which gives the error:<\/p>\n<pre><code>\/usr\/sbin\/grub-probe:error:failed to get canonical path of \/cow.\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Much Googling&#8230; Many hits on &#8220;I have the same problem&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The easy fix? Use Boot-Repair. It isn&#8217;t included in the LiveCD so you have to download it with:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu\/boot-repair\n<span id=\"line-2\" class=\"anchor\"><\/span>sudo apt-get update\n<span id=\"line-3\" class=\"anchor\"><\/span>sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair &amp;&amp; boot-repair<\/pre>\n<p>I ended up having to clean up GRUB &#8211; how many different entries CAN it find? All of them, apparently.
