ESXi and USB-controlled UPS

Arrggg…. You would think that there would be an elegant solution for a controlled UPS-based shutdown of ESXi but, unless you have invested in a network-based UPS, this is not the case! While ESXi 5.1 can access the UPS from the guest OSes, there is not an elegant solution! I wonder how many instances where a small branch office needs to use ESXi to reduce hardware costs but do not want to incur the costs of a network-based UPS…

Anyway, there are some workarounds but I wish that VMware would include a UPS daemon (upsd ring a bell?) in the core ESXi install.

Anyway, I will work away at some of the interesting solutions out there to get this to work!

United State's Government Rejects Building a "Death Star"

Nice to see that there are still some politicians – and indeed citizens – who still have a sense of humor! No, the United State’s government will not be building a “Death Star” as can be seen here at the White House’s petitions website.

To quote the White House’s Paul Shawcross:

This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

  • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

  • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

  • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Now, being a cynic the main reasons likely are points one ($850,000,000,000,000,000) and three (a significant design flaw). Well… maybe it is just point one…

Cooking Musing…

I was just cooking supper for my son and have to wonder why the chicken strips need to be cooked at 400°F for 12 to 16 minutes and the smiley fries needed 450°F for 16 to 18 minutes?

Can’t they find a way to have the same cooking times and temps?

The foam in my Zero Halliburton aluminum camera case has turned to "slurry"

In my teens I was thinking about becoming a professional photographer. With the overly generous help of my mom and dad I gathered up some nice semi-pro 35 mm gear. There was a store going out of business and I managed to buy the de rigueur aluminum Zero Halliburton travel case. Anyway, photography did not pan out – I was pretty good technically but I have learnt that I am artistic only in viewing…

Anyway, yesterday I opened my Zero Halliburton case to find that the foam has turned to a “slurry”. Or maybe, if you can imagine it, melted, sticky cotton candy that is black in colour. I am not impressed. As you can see below, I have emailed Zero Halliburton to see if something can be done. Hopefully the gear – while being film based – isn’t toast…

Hi Folks,

Many years ago as a teenager with thoughts of becoming a professional photographer I purchased a Zero Halliburton case for my camera equipment. That did not pan out and my in the last 10 years my gear was stored, safely and securely I thought, in my Zero case – batteries and film out of the cameras, end caps on all lenses, etc.

Yesterday, I opened the case and found that the foam had turned to, well, slush. Or, maybe black, sticky melted cotton candy would be a better discription. Not only that, but it is now stuck to my camera bodies, lenses and accessories.

Three questions:
a) what is the correct way to clean off this mess;
b) has this damaged my gears (e.g. seals); and
c) how do I get new foam?
Maybe four questions: Will the new foam turn to slush as well?

Thanks
Mike

[UPDATE]

I rather quickly received a reply from Debbie Pawigon! Not exactly the best answer I wanted but an answer none-the-less. Anyway, I think that the need to replace the foam every five years is important!

Michael,

It has been suggested to us that the best way to clean our lenses and accessories is as follows:

Isopropyl alcohol works—-but ONLY when used with a stiff brush, such as a bristle brush for fingernails.  Rubbing with a saturated cloth doesn’t do it.

I would try using the alcohol for the case as well-I contacted my repair facility and they didn’t have any other suggestions, I will also try and contact some foam companies that we deal with and if they have any additional recommendations, I will let you know.

Ordering foam can be done on our website-we do only carry a few sizes.

http://www.zerohalliburton.com/photography/foam-inserts.html

Please measure the case and if unable to find the size you can try a Company called Foam Plastics at www.caseclub.com.

Please note that foam should be changed every 5 years –please see information from our website:

Foam Inserts (Camera Cases, Gun Cases, Cue Cases)

ZERO Halliburton uses the highest quality latex and petroleum-chemical based foam available, however, like any other foam product, the foam in ZERO Halliburton camera cases, gun cases, and pool cue cases is subject to degradation over time. If you notice any appearance of fine powder, loss of resiliency, noticeable color change or a consistency change such as a rubbery soft feel, it is time to obtain a replacement set of foam. As a maintenance procedure, we recommend that you replace the foam interior every five years. It is important to note that it is the sole responsibility of the case owner to regularly check for foam degradation and to replace the foam as necessary. ZERO Halliburton is not responsible for any damage sustained to the contents of the case due to foam degradation.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Happy New Year!

Hope that everyone had a great Christmas and that the upcoming new year will be peaceful, healthy, happy and maybe profitable!

I also managed to get my weatherstation working directly through ESXi 5.1 via USB. I don’t know what I did but after that last patch set it seems to work just fine. I cannot find anything in the latest patch set (ESXi510-201212001) related to USB fixes. Anyway, I am happy now that I no longer need those buggy USB-over-IP adaptors from SiiG and StarTech. Happy, happy,  joy, joy!

Some technical updates

Let’s see… It has been some time since I have updated this blog and a number of things have changed.

  • My home virtualization solution of VMware ESXi 3.5 (32-bit) on a IBM x225 (dual Xeon, 2GB RAM, 146GB RAID-5 storage) has been replaced by VMware ESXi 5.1 (64-bit) on an HP ML310 g5 (single quad-core Xeon, 4GB RAM, 500GB RAID-1 storage). It is much faster (dunh!) but 4GB isn’t quite enough RAM. VMware ESX simply rocks!
  • My old desktop with an Intel E6600 Core2Duo on an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe went flakey. Sometimes it would stay up for 14, 15 hours; then it would not even get to the BIOS screen before restarting. It was replaced by an Intel Core i5 3450 Quad Core Processor on an MSI Z77A-G43. Much, much faster than the old Core2Duo. I do not overclock. Then again, I don’t run Elder Scrolls either.
  • After spending about a year with the original iPad I came to realize I still do not like Apples. (While Mac OS X underlying BSD Unix is great I hate the Mac interface. I also hate the new Ubuntu interface as well – I do not want to have a Mac-like interface for cheap…) I purchased an Asus TF-300 with the detachable keyboard. I really like Android and the things I can do.
  • Linux Mint is still the best distribution I have found. Ubuntu was great but as I noted above I hate the interface they have come up with – and the “we will tell you what it will be” lack of customization. Linux Mint 14 and Cinnamon 3 is great!

Synology DSM – Fix for media files not indexing

I have had an issue with media files not indexing once I copied them onto my Synology DiskStation NAS. I often copy files from the NAS to do media conversion on an old Ubuntu box for .mkv (Matroska) encoded (or “containered”) files. Despite how numerous .mkv files are, it seems that many devices do not seem to have the ability to decode them.

Anyway, I use an NFS mount to copy the files between the Ubuntu box and the NAS. The problem apparently is that apparently there is no DiskStation the kernel supports inotify. The DiskStation media indexer supports automatic indexing of files being added via SMB, AFP or FTP, it is not aware if you move or copy files via NFS (or SSH/Telnet for that matter) to the DiskStation directly.

After much searching I found the above information written by Gerd Wolfgang Naschenweng who develop a really nice script that will index really, really – like lightening quick – quickly. You can run the file manually once you SSH into the NAS or you can put it in the NAS’ crontab. The little utility is here.

Fix for DD-WRT Port Forwarding Issue

I was working on a DD-WRT firmware’d router and could not get the port forwarding to work.

Anyway, the solution is as follows:  In the Control Panel click on “Administration” then on “Commands”. Copy and paste this inside the Commands Sheet:

 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE

Click on “Save Firewall” and then “Run Commands”

I found it on dd-wrt.com’s community forums (link) by mojud.
